“PEX” describes the tubing family, not one universal connection. Crimp, clamp, cold-expansion and push-fit products use different fitting geometries, rings or sleeves, tools and installation procedures. A matching nominal size is only the first check.
Identify the connection system
Read the fitting description and the manufacturer markings. A fitting made for a crimp or clamp connection must be installed with the specified ring and compatible tool. Cold-expansion fittings are made for the matching expansion tubing and sleeve system. Push-fit fittings have their own preparation, insertion-depth and reuse rules.
Crimp and clamp connections
Crimp and clamp systems use an insert-style fitting, but the approved ring or clamp, tool and verification method matter. Confirm the standards and instructions stated for the exact fitting and tubing. Use a calibrated tool and the prescribed go/no-go or visual checks where required.
Cold-expansion connections
Cold-expansion systems rely on the tubing and sleeve expanding and recovering around a fitting designed for that method. Do not substitute a standard insert fitting unless the manufacturer explicitly lists it for that system. Confirm the tubing designation, sleeve, fitting and expansion-tool instructions together.
Push-fit connections
Push-fit products generally require a square, clean, deburred tube end and a verified insertion depth. Confirm that the exact fitting is listed for the specific PEX tubing and service. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for support, disassembly and reuse.
Match every specification
- Connection method and applicable standard.
- Nominal tubing size.
- Tubing type approved for the fitting.
- Fitting material and intended service.
- Required ring, sleeve or clamp.
- Required tool and inspection method.
- Pressure and temperature rating.
- Manufacturer part number and package quantity.
Why material still matters
Brass, polymer and stainless-steel fittings can all be appropriate when they are listed for the system and conditions. Select based on the product documentation, water conditions, local requirements and project specifications—not on material name alone.

- Identify the connection method already used.
- Confirm nominal size at both ends of the fitting.
- Verify the required tool and ring or sleeve.
